Expressive Photography with Alan Ross

September 7-9, 2018 with Alan Ross

An expressive photograph is the ultimate blend of vision, passion and craft. The secret to creating one is not in the tools or technology you use, but in knowing how to see, interpret and express.

In this hands-on inspiring workshop—open to photographers at all levels—the emphasis will be on mastering those photographic concepts and techniques essential to the creation of an image that more effectively expresses your vision.

Under the guidance of long-time Ansel Adams assistant Alan Ross, you will learn how to isolate the evaluate the elements of a scene, translate the literal to the expressive, and use optics and exposure to best effect.

Visits to a few of St. Louis’ most picturesque locations will provide inspiration and opportunity, with demonstrations, practice sessions and gentle critique laying the foundation for individual photographic advancement.

You will refine your skills and explore various techniques with Alan at your side to provide input and instruction specific to your individual needs. By the end of the workshop, you will have a better grasp of the tools and methodologies needed to respond to your vision with confidence.

Important topics covered during the session may include:
Visualization—what it is and why it’s important
Equipment choice and its impact on your final image
Optics and exposure
Filters—how and when to use them
Evaluating a scene and managing the details
Tonality
Preparing the image for printing
