Cyanotypes: The Magic of Alternative Photography, Workshop

Preserve the beauty of nature and form as you use plants, abstract objects and transparencies to learn about one of photography’s first photographic processes, cyanotypes. Using 19th century technology this class will explore the art and magic of light as you watch your sun prints come to life right before your eyes. Take your creativity to new heights as you create a cyanotype canvas bag, notecards and more! Enjoy a short presentation from local artist and educator Jenny Kettler who uses this practice to capture impressions of rain. This fun class will surely leave an impression in more than one way.
Jenny Kettler is an artist, educator and community arts organizer based in St. Louis, MO. For three years she surveyed the Midwestern landscape photographing plastic bags caught in trees and bushes in a region with no bag bans. Her more recent cyanotype work focuses on recording impressions of rain and snow in quickly changing climate.
Her photographic work is hauntingly beautiful and explores the complex and interwoven relationships humans have with nature in the Anthropocene epoch. She strives to use art as a tool for environmental education to create an eco-consciousness in America again. Her projects fluctuate between healing meditations, photography, installations and organizing nature art community initiatives.
She holds a Masters of Fine Arts in Photography from Southern Illinois University – Edwardsville and a Bachelors of Arts in Photojournalism from the Missouri School of Journalism in Columbia, MO.
