Infrared Photography and Beyond, with Matthew Piper

Tuesday, April 26, 2022
Online: 6-7pm CST

Matthew Piper specializes in high resolution, high dynamic range fine art infrared photography, in both black & white and color. To shoot infrared, he had the internal infrared filter removed, making his Canon 5Ds-r full-spectrum. He shoots with various L-series lenses and a range of filters to achieve a multitude of effects with a single-exposure and minimal postproduction editing and manipulation. Matthew thinks of his work as “dreamscapes,” or as still photography’s version of “magical realism” with color infrared providing a surreal quality that takes the artwork to a new expressive level.

When not creating artwork, Matthew Piper earned a PhD in philosophy and cognitive science at UC San Diego. He has published on the nature of consciousness. His dissertation is a defense of an original neuroscientific explanation for the experience of the passing of time.
