The Four Directions – A Southwestern Journey

Lecture with William Fields
Thursday, April 11th, 2024
Online: 6 pm CT

Spend an evening with photographer and author William Fields as he shares his personal journey exploring the beauty of the Colorado Plateau around the Four Corners States, an experience that led to his award-winning book The Four Directions – A Southwestern Journey.

At age 10, William ‘Bill’ Fields wasn’t an author or a photo artist. He first learned of the Anasazi culture of the Southwestern U.S. from his father, who shared stories of the ancient peoples he found in newspaper articles and other readings.

Bill began to travel as a young man in the navy. Later he went to California as a Field Engineer for Pratt & Whitney Aircraft, and his journey was afoot. While working in Los Angeles, Grand Canyon was an eight-hour drive away. “I’ll never forget that first breathtaking instant when I looked over the South Rim.” But it was so much more than the exquisite beauty of the landscape that drew him to the obsession that ultimately became the book he will discuss with us on April 11th.

Bill will share his process in the context of his photography, his writing, his inner voyage, and its ultimate meaning to him and to us.
